Hi my name is Aurora Sassone. Based in Sydney, Australia, I am a creative soul with a deep connection to the ocean and a passion for creating a healthier more connected planet.
Mermaid Inks was founded as a way for me to share my work with others and has grown into so much more. I see my work as a way to bring more color, vibrancy and joy into the world and I hope to inspire others to explore and create.
The inks are a deep meditation for me. When I paint, I lose myself in the flow, intuitively guiding the colors as they move and transform, blend and bloom. Each work is different, with its own story to tell. I am just there to bring that story to life.
I have always had a love for art. Growing up I would spend hours drawing and eventually studied art and communications as an undergrad at University. After graduating, I put my paint brush aside and pursued a career in marketing and communications, using my creativity to tell transformational stories and head-turning campaigns. While I have had much success over the years, there has always been a burning feeling inside of me that I just couldn’t satiate - the need for deeper expression and creativity.
I first stumbled upon alcohol inks and acrylic pours a few years ago and would watch process videos for hours, endlessly fascinated by the technique and deeply satisfied by the way the colors danced across the blank canvas, moving with purpose and gusto. I finally started experimenting and taking classes. There was one class in particular that I really got into the flow. It was here that I tapped into the deep-seated creative vein. All of a sudden it was like someone turned on the fire house and ever since I’ve not been able to shut it off.
Most of my work is abstract mixed media, a blend of alcohol inks, various acrylics and other mediums. I work on yupo paper, canvas and ceramic.
